Bella and the Happily Ever After Page 10

Page 10
Bella walks out of my backdoor, holding a bright pink pitcher and a stack of matching pink plastic cups. “The sweet tea is ready! And it’s extra sweet, which is the way all tea should be, if you ask me.”
“Woohoo,” My mom says. She takes the pitcher from her and pours herself a glass. “Thanks, sweetheart.”
“No problem.”
Bella flashes me a smile and walks over. She’s wearing a pale yellow sundress that shows off her golden tan. The local track offered another discount season pass for the summer and we’ve been taking advantage of the deal and going to ride almost every day. At night, we cuddle, watch Netflix, and talk about our plans for our future track.
My old teammate Jett even put us in contact with his parents who own their own motocross track on the other side of the state. They’re going to teach us what they know about running a successful motocross business, and maybe one day in the future, we can all host a series race together.
“The food smells good,” Bella says, sliding her arm around me. “And you look extremely handsome. The apron is telling the truth.”
I laugh and look down at myself. I’m wearing Phil’s oversized grilling apron that says, “World’s most handsome cook.” It was a novelty gift my mom gave him last Christmas. Perched on my head is a pair of cheap lime green sunglasses that Matt asked me to hold onto for him while he went to play in the water sprinkler. I take them off and slide them over my eyes.
“You think this look is sexy?” I say.
“Nope,” she says, holding back a laugh. “But the apron says you’re handsome, so I guess I have to believe it.”
I laugh and put the sunglasses on top of her head. She kisses me on the cheek and then opens a package of paper plates and starts handing them out to everyone. “Food is ready!” she calls out to her brother and Dylan, who are still throwing the football.
I stack up the burgers on a plate and carry them to the picnic table that Bella has arranged all neatly. There’s burger buns, lettuce, cheese, pickles, and condiments all laid out next to several bags of chips.
My family and her mom and brother all gather around and we sit down together and eat. There’s laughter and jokes and a few embarrassing stories of my childhood that my mom just can’t help but share with everyone. I look over at Bella, and she smiles up at me. It’s funny how life happens.
One day you’re training hard for a goal you’ve wanted your entire life, and then the next day you’re throwing that goal away, in favor of something else. Something simple. Backyard picnics and little brothers and the one girl you met on accident one day and fell so hard for that you knew you couldn’t live without her.
Life doesn’t always turn out the way you planned it.
No. Sometimes, it turns out better.
